The 7-Day Small Talk Challenge

One small, manageable mission a day, designed for people who feel nervous, awkward or stuck. No scripts to memorise. No performing. By Day 7 you won’t just know how to make small talk — you’ll have done it, repeatedly, in real life.

DAY 1

The Observation Warm-Up

Your mission: Notice three conversations happening around you today — in a café, shop, office or online. Just watch and listen. Don’t join in. Write down one thing people talked about.

Why it works: Anxiety shrinks when you shift your focus outwards. Today is about tuning your ear to how ordinary small talk really sounds: casual, imperfect and low-stakes.

You don’t have to say a word today. Just show up and notice. That’s already more than most people do.

Check-in: What was one topic you overheard people chatting about?

DAY 2

The One-Word Opener

Your mission: Make eye contact and say one word or short phrase to someone today. “Morning.” “Cheers.” “Alright?” That’s it. One interaction counts as a win.

Why it works: The hardest part of small talk is starting. Today you practise the very first moment — the opener — with zero expectation of a longer conversation.

One word. You’ve said harder things than “morning” in your life. Today you prove the start is survivable.

Check-in: Who did you say it to, and how did it feel straight afterwards?

DAY 3

The Single Question

Your mission: Ask one low-stakes question to someone today. “Busy in here today, isn’t it?” or “Have you tried the coffee here?” One question. Done.

Why it works: Questions are the engine of small talk. They take the pressure off you and invite the other person to do the talking. You don’t need a clever question — just one.

You’ve made it to Day 3. That’s not luck — that’s you choosing to show up. Keep going.

Check-in: What did you ask, and what did they say?

HALFWAY! LOOK HOW FAR YOU’VE COME

Three days in. You’ve observed real conversations, opened your mouth and asked a question out loud. That might not sound like much — but for someone who finds this hard, it’s enormous. You’re not just thinking about small talk any more. You’re doing it.

DAY 4

The Follow-Up

Your mission: When someone responds to you today, add one follow-up to what they say. If they say “Yeah, it’s been mad busy,” reply “Has it been like this all week?” Just one.

Why it works: Real conversations move forward through follow-ups. Today you practise staying in a conversation for one beat longer than usual.

You’re not trying to be interesting today. You’re trying to be interested. That shift changes everything.

Check-in: What did they say, and what did you follow up with?

DAY 5

The Compliment or Comment

Your mission: Make one genuine observation or compliment today. “That’s a great colour.” “You seem to know this area well.” It doesn’t need to be witty — just real.

Why it works: Observations and compliments are small talk gold. They open doors and put people at ease when they’re genuine. Today you practise noticing something out loud.

You’re not trying to impress anyone. You’re sharing something you already noticed. That’s not performance — that’s kindness.

Check-in: What did you say, and how did they respond?

DAY 6

The Two-Minute Conversation

Your mission: Have a short back-and-forth that lasts at least two minutes. Use everything you’ve practised — opener, question, follow-up — with anyone: a shopkeeper, a colleague, a neighbour.

Why it works: Today you put the pieces together for the first time. Two minutes is short. It won’t feel short in the moment — and that’s fine. You’ve been building to this all week.

You have more tools now than you did six days ago. Trust them. Trust yourself.

Check-in: How did it start, and how did it end? Did it feel different from Day 1?

DAY 7

Do It Again, On Purpose

Your mission: Seek out one small talk opportunity today — don’t wait for it to happen. Start a conversation on purpose with someone you don’t know well, using any approach that feels right.

Why it works: The shift from reacting to starting is the final piece. Today you prove small talk isn’t something that happens to you — it’s something you choose to do.

Seven days ago, this felt impossible. Today you’re doing it on purpose. That’s not small. That’s a breakthrough.

Check-in: What did you do differently today compared with Day 1? What does that tell you about yourself?

CHALLENGE COMPLETE — YOU DID IT

Seven days of doing something that genuinely scared you. You’ve observed, opened, questioned, followed up, complimented and started conversations on purpose. Small talk won’t stop being a challenge overnight, but you now have proof — real evidence from your own life — that you can do it.

Your next step: pick one situation this week where you’d normally go quiet, and say something instead. Just one. You already know how.
